A short history of The Dirty Habit

In a designated area of natural beauty, The Dirty Habit is a beautiful historic building situated in the lovely and picturesque Kentish village of Hollingbourne, It is close to Leeds Castle, and nestles at the foot of the North Downs, directly on The Pilgrims Way, which was often used by the pilgrims on their way to Canterbury.

The site of the pub dates from the 11th century and was owned by monks who brewed their ale there and survived by resting weary pilgrims on their way to Canterbury.

King James II also stayed at the Inn whilst on his way to France via Canterbury and Dover.

The pub has recently undergone extensive renovation and has been completely restored, bringing the building up to modern expectations whilst keeping the period charm and character. The pub is now a stunning inn, warm and inviting providing a perfect place for eating and drinking for every visitor from near or far.

The long Georgian oak bar and oak panelling in the bar area have been restored to perfection by skilled local craftsmen. The Victorian tables and chairs have been retained, restored and re-upholstered to ensure that the English pub traditional interior has not been lost.

'The Monks Corner' is ideal for private dining and can cater for up to 30 people. With oodles of atmosphere, oak beams to the apex and a bread oven in the corner, you will enjoy a special occasion in a special place with family and friends.

The exterior terrace area has been beautifully refurbished and now offers a quiet outdoor place to enjoy your food or relax with your drink in comfort.

All the food is sourced locally whenever possible and freshly cooked by our award winning chef when ordered. The menu caters for a wide spectrum of tastes and budgets with such favourites as traditional steak and kidney pie or fish and chips to exotic specialities such as langoustine or lobster available.

The Dirty Habit is a traditional English pub and welcomes locals for a pint or guests for a meal. Whichever you choose, you will be sure to receive a warm welcome and the very best service and food available.
